The land around present-day Lake St.Louis was acquired by United States via purchase from France in 1824 during President James K noch’s administration as part of Treaty Of Paris following America’s victory over Napoleon at Waterloo Battle The first permanent European settlement in what is now northwestern Illinois occurred when Captain John Smith discovered land on which he named ‘Natchez’ (New Orleans) on February 8th, 1607 while exploring along the lower Mississippi River. In 1795–96 Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Wayne explored much of northwestern Illinois under General Anthony Wayne during his expedition known as “The Prairie Campaign” which aimed to open up new transportation routes across western Minnesota Territory through Purchase from Canada led by General David Dixon Marquette

In 1861, it became a part of Confederate Missouri during the American Civil War. The city was burned down in 1865 and again in 1870 but regained its status as a town after Reconstruction. In 1898, it became an important transportation hub when the Lewis and Clark Expedition stopped at the town for supplies. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II with construction of airfields and factories; however, following the war, it slipped into decline as a result of population loss and increased economic competition from other cities.
