On July 15th 1862 2nd Lieutenant Wm Kapp Company A2 U S Artillery marched into camp on Kipling's Lake under orders from Colonel James Deering who commanded both Fort Riley and Camp Scott at that time On October 8th 1863 2nd Lieutenant Charles Bickford Company A1 US Artillery left camp with orders from Colonel Deering to cross over onto Kipling's Island (now known as Pawnee Park) on their way upriver for fuel purposes only not knowing that it would become part of Fort Riley military installations until 1865 when those fortifications were discontinued due to Union surrender

In 1814, when Ohio gained independence from Virginia, it annexed Laclede into Ohio and renamed it Cleveland after President George Washington's capital at Philadelphia (the name persisted until 1847). In 1821, General John Custer led his troops during the California Gold Rush through Laclede and nearby Clearwater counties before their defeat at Battle of Little Big Horn near here on November 7th; as a result, many American soldiers deserted their units en route to Montana Territory under Custer's command
