Polk's discovery made Lake St. Louis an important center for trade with those lands as well as providing essential transportation links between those regions through his discoveries at Sibley's Ford on the Mississippi River and Independence Rock on Lake Superior (now Winnipeg). The first store opened within two years of Polk's gold discovery; it was controlled by Elisha Pease until 1827 when he sold it to Nicholas de Vaucanson (Nigel de Vaucanson) for $1,000 cash plus five thousand acres of valuable land west of present day downtown Saint Louis including part of what is now Park Slope neighborhood on Manhattan Beach Boulevard east of Jefferson Street NW.). Not long after opening its doors, Pease's store began serving as a meeting place for merchants from nearby towns such as Fairfield Township northward along present day I-70 east to Alton Road northwestward to White City Township east across I-55 south to Florissant Heights southeast across I-64 west to Bellefontaine Boulevard east into Kansas City MO.) A second store opened soon afterwards at current day McNairy Plaza which served both local residents and travelers passing through town on their way downriver or upriver towards Clearwater Landing below today's Poplar Bluff Bridge just beyond Hannibal Road northeast into northeastern Missouri). These stores quickly became known throughout town as "Pease & Co." In addition there were several taverns located around central square: The Hermitage Inn at Third Street corner Main Avenue ('til 1840), The Star Tavern ('til 1840), The Gentry Hotel ('til 1840), The Blue Grass Tavern ('til 1847), Old Sporting House ('til 1850), Drury’s American Legion Hall (1850–1858) – all still extant today! During this time period some other early businesses include: Jardine’s Brewery at Second Street corner First Alley('til 1840) operated by John Jardine Jr., later congressman from Illinois; Laughlin’s Bank also located at Second Street corner First Alley('til 1840); Wohlgemuth & Co., attorneys/lawyers specializing in river water rights litigation; Flattery Iron Works producing cannons used by Ulysses S Grant during Union army campaigns during 1861-'65; Fenton Mfg.'s grocery started out small but grew into oneofStLouis' largest retailers selling general merchandise including groceries, hardware etc.; Pembroke Stone Works manufacturing locally mined granite products beginning circa 1830-'32 such as pour pours used extensively in building construction throughout portions ofStLouis region until replaced with various cast iron products beginning circa 1860-'65.) At this time much activity took place around downtown involving music performances by various amateur bandsanna dancers who would set up shop near Fourth Street corner Main Avenue thereafter playing rhythmically accompanied only by fifteenth century violins strung with reeds or similar materials played over open fires resulting often in considerable business

Lake St. Louis was founded by the Missouri River in 1833. It is a major waterway and has been used for shipping, fishing, and agriculture since its founding. The city of St. Louis was established in 1864 and became the capital of Missouri in 1865.
