Lake St. Louis is a large body of water located in Missouri, United States. The name comes from the French word for "large creek." It was founded by fur traders and explorers in 1763 as a trading post on the Arkansas River. In 1920, when St. Louis annexed parts of Jefferson County, Missouri, it became apparent that there was enough space within the existing city limits for two separate municipalities with different cultures and histories to share a single municipal government while still being part of same metropolitan area - this merger eventually became known as "StL" or simply "StL". Today, Lake St.Louis remains an important commercial center for both local businesses and travelers throughout central Missouri due to its wide variety of attractions including shopping malls, restaurants, casinos and hotels; as well as its position at the mouth of navigation on the Mauretania River which makes it an ideal spot for fishing trips or sailing events
The first permanent settler in what is now St. Louis was a group of French Canadians who arrived in 1764. The area that is now the downtown area was part of the Cahokia Mound and Pottawatomie Indian Village settlements. In 1803, St. Louis became a United States territory following the Louisiana Purchase from France. The city was named for General James K. Polk, whose home was located in what is now Downtown St. Louis.
