A battle between American forces and Native Americans at this location is sometimes considered to be one of the most infamous cavalry engagements during American history

The treaty resulted in France ceding land along the Missouri River to the United States, and as a result, Lake St. Louis became one of the most important military and commercial hubs in America. In the 1840s, lakefront property began becoming available for buying and development, and by 1860, it had become an extensive suburban area with several thousand residents. In 1871, when Lake St. Louis was made into a city by ordinance, it had a population of around fifty thousand people. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, but by 1900 it had shrunk to just over fifteen thousand people. By 1930, however, Chicago had surpassed Lake St. Louis as the largest city on the continent and its population had swollen to over two hundred thousand people; while Lake St.Louis continued to decline in popularity until its incorporation into Jackson County in 1941 as part of Jackson County's consolidation into Missouri City (later Kansas City), it remains an important cultural and economic center within Jackson County today.
