In 1861, Jesse Barnes purchased 160 acres (0 hectare) of land from Indians to start a community called Barnesville which eventually merged with Kirkwood into one town when Barnes died in 1865.Barnesville had two stores, one blacksmith shop and three residences: an log cabin used as a jail or lunatic Asylum until 1903 and later used as the office of trustees for both towns; a frame house built about 1868 which served as the only hotel until it closed around 1951; and a contributing log cabin used as storage before it also closed around 1951 In 1886 Grady Senter bought 100 acres (3 hectares) of land east of Barnesville from Amos Sprague for $500 Sprague named his settlement "Kirkwood". After Senter died childless in 1902 he left all rights to his settlement to his nephew Rollin Sprague who continued to name his community after himself until 1925 when he sold all rights to Kirkwood Township Incorporated to the Township Development Committee formed under Act No., 92-548 Pamphlet #1 of 1926 . At that time Kirkwood became an unincorporated village . In 1982 Vito Curran organized what was then known as The Village Association which took over management of all services provided by township government including street cleaning, social welfare benefits , Parks & Rec Dept., water supply & sewerage etc

The name "Kirkwood" comes from the Cherokee word kirkwid-a meaning "hollow". The first settler in Kirkwood was James Boice and his wife Elizabeth Ritchie in 1838. They were pioneers in what is now Randolph County and founded a log cabin on the banks of the White River near present day Kirkwood. The first post office was established in 1841 and named for James Boice. In 1865, John Cramer built a log cabin on land that he had purchased from Samuel Eaton for $100$. He became one of the first farmers in Kirkwood Township and raised corn, wheat, hay, potatoes, milk and eggs until 1896 when he sold his land to John Hickey. In 1902, Hiram Pavey bought Cramer's farmstead and began growing maize which he processed into flour until 1923 when he discontinued production because of World War II shortages of supplies. His son-in-law Wernher Pavey took over production after his father's death in 1951. By 1910 there were only two houses left standing in Kirkwood - one occupied by J N Smith who ran a general store andthe other by A G Hill who operated an engine shop out of his home In 1918 Main Street was widened as part of Highway 50 Project which also improved access to town from Route 66 northward through Randolph County In 1941 local officials approved plans to build a high school within town limits but nothing ever happened Following World War II there were decreases in manufacturing activity throughout America due to economic recession; however industry continued to exist primarily withinSt Louis region providing jobs for locals while outside workers delivered goods or supplied services . In 1951 when Wernher Pavey died intestate with no children available to take over production Main Street reopened with four businesses existing side by side: J N Smith's General Store (later closed), A G Hill's Engine Shop(which later became an auto parts store),and Hank & Jane's Dairy (now closed). This allowed community members access to common resources without having to purchase stocks or wait for deliveries . In 1969 main street was extended westward past its original terminus via Liberty Avenue creating what is now called Park Road
