After his inauguration speech on Tuesday morning, Lincoln took a carriage ride back to Springfield where he dined with other dignitaries at Monticello before returning home that evening. 2 months later on October 6th (the date that Missouri became a state), Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while riding in an open carriage through downtown Springfield by John Wilkes Booth Jr.. As word spread of this shocking event, residents of Kirkwood quickly gathered outside their homes to grieve with those who had lost their President and many more were left struggling financially as a result of Lincoln's death alone on such short notice. Just over one week later on October 14th (the day after his funeral), Congressman James Buchanan announced that Missouri would become an slave state following the election of Andrew Johnson as president which caused many people including the Kirkwoods to lose their jobs as cotton merchants throughout central Illinois switched allegiances towards Unionist candidate Johnson).
