Kirkwood, Missouri is a town located in Callaway County, Missouri. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The history of Kirkwood can be traced back to 1836 when three men named Cash, Plummer and Kerr established a trading post on the banks of the White River near present day Kirkwood. They named their post "Kirkwood" after an apple orchard they cultivated nearby. The Post office was established in 1839 and continued operation until it closed in 1851. The first school in Kirkwood was built in1846 by Mrs. John Minton and operated for one year before being replaced by a log cabin which served as the school Annex from 1847-1848. In 1850, construction began on what would become the first School House in Kirkwood which served as the primary educational facility for residents of the town until it burned down in 1903. In 1861, James Waddell opened a general store and stagecoach stop called "Waddell's Station". This stop helped spread trade throughout central Callaway County and became an important commercial center for both locals and travelers alike during this time period. Over time, Waddell's Station grew into one of the most significantlementsofKirkwood's history with its many businesses that survive to this day including Kwik TripUSA (now Shoprite), JCPenney (now Sears) and Sam's Club (now Costco). In 1913, Mr. William Fenton donated land to allow for construction of a high school which would serve as ahubof community activities including Athletics Association meets held at Mount Nebo High School; dances performed at Mrs Owens' house; Drama Company productions staged at local churches; Model T Show races Held at various locations across town; annual Ford Festivals held at quarries nearby; etc., etc., etc.). The first building constructed on Fenton's donation were classrooms, gymnasium/auditorium & kitchen facilities complete with plumbing & heating systems that allowed for full scale teacher training classes! Unfortunately due to funding shortages during World War I(which affected all types of schools), only 5th grade students attended Hagerstown High School from 1917-1921 while 6th grade students took classes from 1922-1929 inside their own new building known as Main Campus! In 1933-1934 alterations were made to Main Campus such as adding an auditorium & enlargingthe gymnasium which later became home tohigh school football games & other sports events till finally closing shop permanently due to lack of funds circa 1979 amidst much controversy withinthe community over non Tanning Facility usage (& subsequent LACK OF PAYMENT FOR THAT ACTIVITY). At present Main Campus remains vacant however You can still find remnantsof formerMain Campus structure like large metal gates remaining outsideOf currentSchoolhouse front facade--evidencethatonedayKirkwoodwillagainbehometo its traditionalcommunity Activities! Kirkwood is a small town in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 590 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Independence, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Kirkwood was Levi Richardson in 1812. He and his family moved to the area from Illinois about that time. A school was established in Kirkwood in 1836 by Mrs. George Wilkinson and taught by Methodist ministers until 1840 when a schoolhouse was built on the present site of the municipal building. In 1851, James Hogg bought some land east of Kirkwood and started a farmstead there which he named Hogg's Grove. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Kirkwood while campaigning for office and stopped at Hogg's Grove to rest before continuing his journey westward. In 1870, William Fenton purchased some property west of Kirkwood from Hogg and started a farm called Fenton's Grove which he continued to operate until 1942 when it became part of the Webster County Agricultural Experiment Station (WCAS). WCAS operated an experimental farm there until it closed in 1966 due to budget cuts. In 1916, Vinton Clements founded what would become Mid-America Broadcasting Corporation (MAC) out of his home on Main Street in Kirkwood with WOAI-TV as its flagship station; KFRC-TV joined MAC three years later as an affiliate (KFRC had been license-owned by Fox Radio since 1928). MAC ceased operations in 1978 after World War II when all television stations were licensed to individual owners; KFRC remained an independent station through all these changes until it sold its affiliation to CBS affiliate KCII-TV effective September 3, 1984.) The first post office opened at Kirkwood on October 1, 1840; it continued operation until October 1, 1841 because of lack of successors among local residents who wished to maintain their connection with each other despite lack thereof statewide mail service during this period. On November 15th 1830 Ezekiel Norton donated land southeast of town for use as a public square () around which trustees could meet for village purposes (). On July 17th 1859 Isaac Newton donated 400 acres () southwest of town for use as a township square (). On October 10th 1860 Jesse White donated 100 acres (); this parcel is now known as Sheldon Park (). The first courthouse located here was built on May 15th 1861 by order of Mayor John Pritchard (). As per Missouri state law at that time only white males could own land within Indian Territory so Jesse White donation effectively doubled voting power within Township!
