Kirkwood is a small town in north-central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,462 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Kirkwood were fur traders from Canada in 1819 and 1820, who named it "Kirkwood" after their house on the banks of the Illinois River. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson and his army passed through the area on their way to battle against Native Americans near Cairo, Missouri; as they crossed a bridge over the river, they noticed white settlers living near what is now Kirkwood High School. The soldiers halted their march and took up position around the houses of local farmers before continuing on their journey. A group of men from nearby Clinton founded a village called Kirkwood Village in 1833 while still marching southward along Jackson's route of battle. When they reached Kirkwood Village, they changed its name to Kirkwood Township because that was where they had situated themselves just east of modern-dayClinton Avenue and Highway 6. In 1840, Jesse Grimes opened a log cabin in what is now downtown Kirkwood and began trading goods with the surrounding settlements. In 1843 he built a gristmill which became one of early commercial businesses in town. In 1861 Jesse Grimes married Sarah Emma Hawkins and started farming near present day Dexter Road and Kemper Street (now has been annexed by nearby Ballwin). One year later he built an addition to his mill which became known as "Grimes House". By 1865 Jesse Grimes had erected five cotton gins which processed 100 bales each day; this represented an early effort to mechanize cotton production in America. With land holdings totaling 5 acres (2 hectares), Jesse Grimes controlled one-seventh of all cultivated acreage within Kendall County at that time – more than any other individual or family! During Reconstruction period (1865–1877) much progress was made for black residents of Missouri during this time period including passage of African American suffrage amendment into state Constitution in 1870 followed by desegregation laws across several southern U S states following civil unrest caused by freedmen's economic struggles combined with Jim Crow segregation policies pursued by Northern forces (see: Blacksmoke Rising). As most black people living west side & central StlL busily engaged in agriculture or commerce numerous stores/bars/night clubs catering mostly Negroes opened up catering primarily Wilsonians (& some Irish) who did not drink alcohol then but today would be arrested if consuming intoxicating liquors
