Kirkwood is a small town in southern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain John Kirkwood and his wife Sarah Kirkwood, and named for their father, James Kirkwood. The first store in Kirkwood opened in 1839. In 1872, the town saw its first electric light bulb being lit up with an on-board generator from a locomotive that ran through the nearby wide open prairie into which it had been sunken to make way for a new railroad line. A post office was established in 1876, and remained operational until it closed in 1907. In 1906, Kirkwood became one of the original towns within St. Louis County when it was created as a result of the split off of neighboring Webster Parish into what are now St. Louis and Ferguson Counties. In 1916, local president George Patton visited Kirkwood during World War I to inspect war supplies storage facilities being constructed near town by General Motors Corporation's Works Progress Administration (WPA). Patton awarded the village an exemption from military draft because he considered it "a Model Town". In 1939, during World War II, local textile manufacturer Joplin Mills built a synthetic rubber plant here; however production ceased after 1942 because of wartime rationing restrictions imposed by Roosevelt's New Deal program as part of his Great Society programs . In 1951, Kirdworth schools were integrated into Lewis University School District #1 following court order; Lewis then merged with Wilson University School District #2 to form Lewis University–Wilson University System in 1969 . Kirdworth also experienced considerable growth during this time including construction of two high school campuses: Kirkwood High School (now renamed Southern Illinois University Carbondale) and Nixon Middle/High School (). Nixon opened its doors on November 15th 1965 as America's first comprehensive all-girls high school outside OFSAs jurisdiction while Southern Illinois University Carbondale opened its doors on September 17th 1966 as America’s second comprehensive all-girls middle/high school outside OFSAs jurisdiction . Nixon’s initial enrollment reached 1,,890 girls with grades 9-12 on October 1st 1966 - making her one of only five Comprehensive Female Colleges or Universities (CFCUs) west of the Mississippi River east thereof classified as “National Universities” by US News & World Report magazine ; later expansions increased enrollments rapidly until 1970 when Nixon closed due to budget cuts .) On May 16th 1971 violence erupted between white students at Northern Illinois Univ.-Edwards campus over deployment of American flag at endowment meeting; ensuing protests led to university closing that day rather than allow any further demonstrations or disruptions .) Withdrawal from federal education funding caused many CMU schools across country(including Nixon)to close too – leaving just 5 CFCUs left nationwide prior to 2000
