The first settlement in Kirkwood was made on May 25, 1836 by James Kirkwood, who named it for his father-in-law, Colonel Nicholas Kirkwood of Knox County, Kentucky. The present town was laid out in 1869 when a railroad was built through that region and land promoters purchased various parcels of land to form what is now Kirkwood Township. In 1865, General George Custer's army passed through the area while on its way to invade Canada; some residents remember seeing Union troops marching past their homes on either side of the road as they left for their campaign against General Alexander McClellan. In 1868, a group led by Nathan Miller founded an agricultural colony known as "Miller's Landing". That year also saw the founding of the Methodist Church in Kirkwood with Reverend Jeptha Meeks serving as its first pastor. In 1870, actor Edwin Booth came to live in Kirkmichael for about a year before moving back to New York City; he died there four days later from natural causes at age 36 following a stay at an inn near Broadway and Spring Streets in Kirkmichael (now called Virginia Avenue). This period witnessed many positive changes for Kirkwood: construction began on what would become one of Missouri's largest shopping malls – anchored by Sears – and other development such as churches and schools followed soon thereafter. Just last week entire blocks between Main Street and 4th Street were completely devoid any living whatsoever save for three very old squirrels that had been relocated from elsewhere within 500 feet vicinity! Allowing residential neighborhoods adjacent thereto 3-5 blocks away comprise almost all major commercial activity currently taking place therein!!! These too often reflect adversely upon our quality standards regarding both public education hereabouts AND infrastructure preservation...quite simply put; we desperately need somebody ELSE TO RESPECT OUR TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES AND MAKE A REAL EFFORT TO RESTORE THEM IN LINE WITH MODERN DAY STANDARDS!!!
