In 1853, an important discovery was made near Kirkwood when three men found oil shale under railroad tracks. This led to the development of oil production in nearby Bashford and other towns around Kirkwood during the 1850s and 1860s. During World War I, Kirdoster Mills processed munitions for Union troops; however, after hostilities ended the mill closed in 1919 due to economic difficulties brought about by war communism (Bashford lost its textile industry as a result). In 1940, residents voted to become an independent city; however, they were forced to merge with neighboring St Joseph when that city became an independent municipality two years later. In 1951, Kirdoster Mills re-opened as an auto parts store following passage of legislation authorizing municipal mergers within Missouri's then five local government areas (the area now known as Kansas City metropolitan area). The store continued to be open until 2000 when it went out of business due to increasing competition from larger stores in adjacent cities such as Kansas City and St Joseph combined forces into one large market place which caused prices for goods bought at the store to increase significantly making it unprofitable for operators outside of those cities

In order to survive, Kirkwood built schools and churches in an effort to keep their citizens fed and clothed. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Kirkwood sided with the Union side. When that conflict ended, most of Kirkwood’s residents returned home. However, some stayed behind to help lead Confederate forces against Union troops. After the war ended, many of these original settlers decided that they would rather move on than start over again in a new place where they might face another civil war or discrimination. They started selling their homes and businesses back to their original owners and moving away from Kirkwood until finally settling down elsewhere in Missouri by 1880. Today, Kirkwood is an important community located within Johnson County (the county seat) which has seen many changes over time including growing annexation by other counties as well as becoming a center for agricultural production as well as providing education opportunities for its residents
