Kirkwood is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It is located on the banks of the Arkansas River, about 25 miles northeast of St. Louis. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The town was named for George Kirkwood, an early settler and part-time justice of the peace. In 1837, Kirkwood's father built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in what is now downtown Kirkwood. The first store in town opened its doors in 1845. By 1865, there were ten stores and twenty-four hotels in town. In 1892, a post office was established at Kirkwood; it remained in operation until 1922. In 1923, the name of the post office was changed to Kirkwood Heights to honor George Waddell Kirkwood Sr., who had been mayor of Kirkwood from 1895 to 1897 and again from 1903 to 1905. In 1955, when Interstate 20 crossed over into Missouri near Kirksville, two businesses adjacent to each other decided they would change their names: One became Ponderosa Pizza and another became Starlite Steakhouse & Pub which still stands today as one of only two restaurants remaining open from that time period with both original names intact (the other being KFC). 2 more businesses followed suit soon after including Denny's - which closed down in 2006 but reopened as Denny's Old Country Store - then finally Jamba Juice - which closed down but reopened as JJB Juice Mart later that year also across I-20 just south of Kirksville proper
