Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Township municipality. The first people to live in Kirkwood were French Canadians who arrived in 1784. By 1827, they had all left for Illinois and other settlements in that state. In 1847, a group of Mormons from Utah arrived and built a cabin on a hill overlooking the town. They called their settlement "Kirkwood" after one of their leaders, Brigham Young. The Mormon settlers didn't stay long and by 1850 most of them had moved on to other parts of Missouri or Iowa. In 1854, Kirkwood was platted as a town by Jens Christensen with about fifty dwellings. The first store opened in October that year along with two churches: St John's Presbyterian Church and Methodist Episcopal Church which served as meetinghouses until 1906 when they became cultural museums again under the name "Kirkwood United Methodist Church". By 1860, there were over one hundred residents living in Kirkwood including twenty-one women married to men working in surrounding farms or mines; eleven children born to these couples; four Negroes; twelve whites who worked as farmers or mechanics; four Free Masons (the first black Masonry Lodge was chartered on July 4th, 1838 near Carthage); six colored slaves whom their owners brought over from slavery in Mississippi during the mid-19th century; and three white servants who serviced the householders during this time period. On January 7th 1861 nine Confederate soldiers killed five Union soldiers at an arms fair organized by Captain Daniel Boone at nearby Beardstown while supplies were being transported through town to Carbondale for General James K., cancelation rally scheduled for that day north of Beardstown Creek Bridge because troops must march southbound instead due to lack of equipment east of Carbondale where they would rendezvous with Major General Stephen Halleck's army marching down from Hannibal County towards Vandalia - this event led to Missouri becoming Confederate Territory following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on December 6th 1863 . An additional two Union soldiers were killed when friendly civilians helping move artillery belonging to Brigadier General John Sibley's brigade upon its entry into Kirkwood encountered Confederate forces posted around Bear Creek Auxiliary Armory about two miles westward on February 12th 1865 while trying unsuccessfully to march into town against orders not To enter without provocation . Because no members of either side were injured or captured it is traditionally accepted that those events did not lead directly to open hostilities between sides . During Reconstruction efforts by both sides after Kansas seceded from the Union (April 16 th 1870), most residents chose not to return home although several businesses reopened although many stores closed because no money could be raised necessary for operating costs since 3/4ths owner stock had been lost during war years due mostly due poor harvests caused primarily by lack of transportation & insurance rates which tripled since reconstruction began
