The town was laid out in 1836 by Elijah Kirkwood and his brother James Kirkwood. They named it for Commodore John A. Kirkwood, the first U.S. officer to cross the Mississippi River with a steamboat in 1837. The original farmstead consisted of only two houses and a barn, but it quickly grew into a small village with over 100 residents by 1860. In 1870, Elijah's son-in-law Daniel Hines purchased the land that makes up today's Kirkwood Village from an Indian tribe and founded what became Hines Township on it in 1872. In 1902, Jerald Wirth erected the first building in present-day Kirkwood Village which served as the town hall until 1974 when it was replaced by the current courthouse/town square complex which also includes several businesses including The Kwik Shop convenience store and various restaurants/cafes clustered around its main plaza entrance (the "Old Courthouse Square").
