The history of Kirkwood, Missouri dates back to the 1800s. The area that now includes Kirkwood was part of the Shawnee Nation and was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1819, a group of settlers from Illinois arrived in what is now Kirkwood and began to settle the area. By 1830, many farmers had moved into the area, and a school was started in 1835. In 1840, Kirkwood became a town and soon developed into a busy trading post with connections to other parts of Missouri. The town experienced heavy growth during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location and importance as an important transportation hub. During this time, it also became home to several businesses including a grocery store, flour mill, post office,and bank. In 1865, Union troops were sent to Kansas to fight in the American Civil War. Aftermath of the war led to large numbers of refugees arriving in Kansas City who needed housing and food. This caused problems for local businesses as they were unable to keep up with demand for space and products. As a result, some merchants decided to move their operations out ofKansas City altogether and form their own towns or villages around Kansas City instead. One such village was founded by John Dennison in 1867 called Newtonia after his home county in Ireland. Kirkwood continued growing during this time as well thanks largely to its position as an important transportation hub between Kansas City and other parts of Missouri. By 1870, it had become one of the largest cities in Missouri with over 100 residents living there alone! It also regained its status as an important trading post thanks to its location near both major rivers –the Arkansas River within walking distance from most homes while also having access to trade goods from other parts of Missouri

Kirkwood, Missouri was a slave and free territory in the U.S. state of Missouri. The town was founded by pioneer John Kirkwood on the Mississippian River in 1819, and it became a major center for cotton production during the antebellum period. In 1838, following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, most of Kirkwood and surrounding areas were purchased by the federal government as part of the Kansas–Nebraska Act. After Kansas was admitted to the Union as a state in 1861, Taney County (part of present-day St Louis) was added to Kansas and slavery was abolished there; however, Kirkwood continued to be an important slaveholding community until 1865.
