In 1902, Kirkwood had its own tornado outbreak that destroyed many homes and businesses including one-time local favorite Canoe Landing Resort which remains a popular spot for swimming and fishing today despite damage caused by the storm). The most recent tornado event occurred on August 14th 1984 when an F4 tornado touched down just east of the community center killing three people and injuring over 50 others

Kirkwood is a small town in the southern part of Missouri. It was founded by George Kirkwood in 1837, and has been populated by Scots-Irish and German immigrants for over 200 years. The town is named after John Kirkwood, an early settler. In 1861, it became the capital of Missouri, and remains the only state capital without a resident governor. The population of Kirkwood was 611 in 2000, but has since declined to around 500. Kirkwood is located on the banks of the Kansas River, about 25 miles south of St. Louis. It shares a ZIP code with St. Peters and Independence Heights in Saint Louis County. As one of five towns in Saint Louis County with less than 1,000 residents (the others are Florissant Heights, National Hilltop Bel Air and Westport), Kirkwood's population is smaller even than that of its largest neighbor - Independence Heights - which had 2,247 inhabitants as of 2000. The first houses were built on what is now Main Street near where Interstate 70 meets I-55 in 1840 by John Marshall McCoy and his wife Susannah McCoy; their son Alexander McCoy also lived there at this time. In 1847–48 Baptist preacher Daniel Webster came to live with them for six months before moving back east to take up a preachorship at Yale University; he left behind three children who would eventually grow up to be missionaries working among other tribes around the world: James Patterson Webster (born October 9th 1889), Marvin Patterson Webster (born November 12th 1893) and Clifford Patterson Webster (born December 20th 1895). When Missouri became an independent country on August 15th 1812 from Great Britain following their war for independence that ended with British defeat at Yorktown days earlier, George Kirkwood acquired 640 acres northwest of present-day Kirkwood on the lower portion of what is now Illinois Road; he called it "Kirkland's Land" because it had been given to him by Captain Campbell’s Creek Company under terms set out during negotiations preceding Britain’s purchase of that land from Native American nations eastward along the Mississippian Trail corridor – including those lying within what are now Stroudsburg Township - but not yet Knoxville Township – as part of Baron von Steuben’s Purchase (#5341). At issue was whether or not these lands lay within present-day Randolph County or just beyond its eastern border into DeKalb County should England become an independent country? It didn't matter much at first because George soon sold most if not all his holdings back to Von Steuben for $10 per acre – though some landitta still lay within Randolph & DeKalb Counties today primarily due to subdivisions made subsequent thereto! This action demonstrated how important it was for future generations living westward along America's railroad network simply connect more easily with each other throughartering various parcels herein42 thus making life easier especially when traveling becoming further inland etc., something that we take for granted today albeit having grown significantly more difficult due largely to various factors such as growing population density & economic development over time while at the same time many infrastructure improvements have been made throughout our corner bracket area resultingin larger businesses being locateither closer/nearer suburbs rather then downtown areas notwithstanding efforts made local government entities thru multiple levies & Tax Increment Financing programs like Neighborhood Centers revenging past mistakes made prior (& continued unfunded mandates)….. well actually they mostly do although DEMAND has played somewhat role too 😉
Kirkwood was founded in 1836 by Captain George Kirkwood and his wife, Anna. The area that now comprises Kirkwood was first inhabited by the Osage Indians. In 1839, Captain Kirkwood sold the land to Colonel James K. Polk for $2,500. In 1847, a post office called "Kirkwood" was established in what is now Kirksville. The town became an agricultural center with a population of about 100 people in 1850. By 1860, the population had grown to over 1,000 people and it remained at this size until after World War II when it decreased to about 500 people. The town experienced heavy manufacturing activity during the 1940s and 1950s as a result of the nearby Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad's operations. This left many jobs open for displaced workers from other industries in the region during these times. However, these days Kirkwood remains primarily a residential community with some retail businesses located downtown.
