Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town located in the southwest corner of Missouri. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in Kirkwood were two brothers, Ebenezer and Gideon Kirkwood, who came to the area in 1818. They built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the stream that flows through the town today. The following year, they founded what would become Kirkwood Academy which still exists and offers educational opportunities for students from pre-kindergarten to high school seniors. In 1824, Gideon Kirkwood married Anna Maria Postell and moved his family to what is now Webster County. In 1830 he purchased land east of downtown St. Louis on which he erected an old brick courthouse and jail which remain standing today as part of the Town Hall Plaza complex housing many local businesses including Donut House restaurant and McCoy's barber shop as well as various other cultural artifacts from early Kirdwood history like pioneer tools and clothing made by local craftsmen. Postell owned several slaves who helped him farm his land but decided against becoming slaveholders after learning about American slavery practices paramours could not own their own slaves without being fined or worse than working themselves to death on their plantations. After her husband died in 1853 she auctioned off her remaining slaves in order to finance her widowed statehood application process; they all survived until freedom was granted to all former slaves following the Civil War three years later when Missouri became a state within the United States (it remained an admitted state until it seceded in 1865).
