Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Branson-Lee county area. Kirkwood is located on Interstate 65 about 20 miles (32 km) east of Springfield and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Kansas City. The city was named for Captain James Kirkwood, who fought in the Mexican–American War and was brevetted brigadier general by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1865. The present day downtown area was laid out as a railroad town in 1872 by General George Armstrong Custer when he became military governor of Missouri during Reconstruction after the American Civil War ended. The first post office opened in 1875, and it remained open until 1915. The current post office building was built in 1907 and dedicated on October 16 that year. Kirkwood has a large number of annual festivals which include summertime carnivals, powwows, agricultural shows, rodeo events, country music concerts, auto shows and more. Kirkwood, Missouri was founded in 1836 by Captain James Kirkwood. It is a small town located in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. The town has a population of about 1,500 people and is home to the University of Central Missouri. The town was first built on the site of an old Indian village. The first settler in Kirkwood was John Smedley, who arrived in 1836. In 1840, Isaac Grimes bought land from Smedley and began construction on what would become the courthouse and jail. The first school was built in 1840 and served as both a daycare and primary educational institution for locals until it closed in 1945. In 1847, Captain Kirkwood donated land to the city of Kirksville for use as its municipal square. In 1955, City Manager Floyd Brown developed plans to make Kirkwood an incorporated municipality. Kirkwood's economy is primarily based on agriculture and local services such as water supply and street maintenance.
