Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in east-central Missouri that has been in existence for over 120 years. The community was founded by soldiers from the Union army during the American Civil War. The population of Kirkwood was 597 at the 2010 census. Kirkwood is located in Logan County, and according to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.6 km²). The first settlers in Kirkwood were men who had served in the Union army during the war. They arrived in 1864 and set up shop along what is now State Route 217. In 1865, they formed a post office and named their settlement after General Ulysses S. Grant, who had fought for the Union side against Confederate forces. The Grants lived at 901 East Main Street until their death in 1888. A new courthouse was built on Main Street near present-day Forest Park Boulevard in 1907 by Judge George Wickersham Jr.. It served as the central courthouse for all of Logan County until it was replaced by a new courthouse construction project which began in 1971 and ended in 1992. In 1925, Kirkwood established its own school system with four schools: Central School, which served grades 1-8; Middle School, which served grades 9-12; High School, which served grades 13-18; and two junior high schools: One serving grades 4-6 and one serving grades 7-9. From 1924 through 1929, Kirkwood also operated its own agricultural society with an emphasis on growing corn and other vegetables. That society disbanded when it merged with another local organization to form the Logan County Agricultural Society Incorporated on December 15, 1929. On October 3rd of each year since 1921, residents have voted on whether or not to hold an annual general election for members of both houses of the local government known as "the board." This body governs most aspects of public life within Kirkwood including fire protection services, street cleaning/maintenance/pesticide applications etc…. elections are held every evennumbered year except for special occasions such as Christmas or state holidays
