The town was founded in 1836 by Captain George Kirkwood and his wife Ann as a farming community on the edge of what is now Cape Girardeau County. They named the community after their father, General George Kirkwood (1784-1859), who had fought in the Mexican War and then served as governor of Illinois before becoming a U.S. Senator from Missouri. The first post office was opened in 1837 and remained open until it closed in 1907 due to cost overruns on its construction project. During World War I, Kirkwood served as an artillery encampment for American Expeditionary Forces under General John J Pershing near Ypres Salient in Belgium; many of the men from this encampment later became prominent figures in American military history such as Admiral Chester Nimitz and General James Gavin during World War II. In 1925, Kirkwood voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by St Joseph County; this request was refused by county authorities because there were already too many residents living within St Joseph County limits. However, on October 15, 1926, with no objection from either party, Kirkwood residents voted 3-1 to become an independent city under the name "Kirkwood." On November 8th of that year, City Hall was dedicated and renamed Home Plate Stadium after then-manager/president/founder Bill McDonald's home plate at old Municipal Stadium across town which had been razed to make way for Interstate Highway 55). In 1957, when Cape Girardeau- adjacent Bentonville lost their right to be called a separate city because they did not annex Kirkwood following similar votes taken by their citizens therein (the reason given being that Bentonville only annexed neighboring towns while cape girardeau annexed everything else), both cities amalgamated into one municipality - still known today as Cape Girardeau-St. Joseph Regional School District #3 - making it one of MO's largest school districts with over 120 schools located throughout its nine counties including portions of Buchanan and Carter Counties which still remain unincorporated areas outside of our larger municipal boundaries today!
