Kirkwood, MO is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,776 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a logging and farming village in 1856 on the banks of the White River. By 1869, it had become a small town with a post office and two stores. In 1881, Kirkwood incorporated as a municipal government with nine residents and one store. It grew rapidly after incorporation and by 1901 had over 100 residents and six businesses. In 1907, Kirkwood became an important railroad junction when the Missouri Pacific Railroad arrived from Iowa City through nearby Raytown to St. Charles County bringing jobs to the area (the first trainload of goods arrived in Kirkwood on October 12). With its new access to railroads and industry, Kirkwood grew even faster than before; within ten years it had tripled in size! During World War II, much of what is now Kirkwood was heavily bombed during the German Invasion of France in 1944-1945; however little damage was done to buildings or people due to lack of standing water or firefighting capabilities at that time. The postwar boom brought more industry and housing development to Kirkwood; however many homes were built without permits which led to several lawsuits later on by homeowners who claim they were wrongfully denied services such as painting or repairs because their homes did not meet certain regulations set forth by city officials at that time. Kirkwood was founded by James Kirkwood in 1837 and became a city in 1949. The first European settler in what is now Kirkwood was James Kirkwood who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 and built a cabin thereon named after himself, which he named "Macklinac." He also homesteaded land near present day Kirkwood on the east side of the Missouri River about seven miles above its mouth. In 1837, James' son John moved from Maryland to central Missouri and settled at what is now Kirkwood with his wife Hannah and their two children, Isaac and Susannah. They erected a log cabin on the same site as today's building which they called "Fulton". In 1840, when Kansas Territory was organized, they donated land to form what would become St. Francois County; this area included most of present-day Kirkwood Township except for a few scattered parcels that were given to other families over time including those of Uriah Smith (the founder of Springfield). The first school in present-day Kirkgood Township opened its doors in 1857; it was housed for many years inside one of John Hennig's storage barns on the north side of town near where Main Street presently crosses Interstate 44 just south of its junction with FM 660. That same year, construction began on what would become home to Central High School which opened its doors September 11th, 1957 under then Superintendent Driggs sophomoric name “Timothy Leary” after LSD guru Timothy Leary who had been invited by then Principal Driggs to participate as an honorary teacher during that year’s summer school program sponsored by Missoula Chamberlayne Foundation (later Pepsi Cola) under funding provided by Mrs. Betty Friedan and her husband Mr. David Wiesenthal who later served as Truman Capote’s personal assistant while living in Independence MO..On October 4th 1960 Central High School welcomed 8th grade students when it burned down due to an unseasonal fire caused by faulty wiring within the newly constructed Addison Hall tower following an election night party! The rebuilt facility opened Fall semester 1962 with new names such as Salem State College until 1978 when it reverted back back to Central High School again!
