Kirkwood is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to Kirkwood were French traders and fur trappers who established a trading post in 1791 on the north side of the river near present-day Missouri State University. The post was abandoned in 1803 when the area became part of Shawnee County, Kansas Territory. In 1836, James Knoebel bought all of present-day Kirkwood from his brother George for $2,000 cash. Knoebel set about building what would become known as "the old town." He laid out streets and laid out parks that are today known as downtown Kirkwood and parts of northside Kirkwood. In 1840, he also constructed a log courthouse and jail which still stands today on Main Street in downtown Kirkwood. In 1848, Jesse Bates purchased all of present-day east side of town from Knoebel for $1,000 cash and began construction on what would becomeknown as Bates Landing (later called Batesville). He laid out street names that still exist today such as Main Street and Douglas Road (now Old Hickory Boulevard). In 1850, he also built a small schoolhouse which still stands today on Second Avenue in downtown Batesville. A storeowner by the name of Addison started operating a general store located south side of town between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue from 1857 until it closed its doors in 1865 because it could not compete with larger stores opening up throughout the region during this time period caused by railroad development within Illinois/Kansas Territory statewide! Addison's store was one among many small businesses that failed due to economic depression brought about by overproduction following Reconstruction following American Civil War & conflict with other states due to slavery abolished nationwide! A post office was established at Batesville in 1861 under the name "Addison". It remained open until 1865 when it was renamed "Kirkwood" after James Knoebel's son-in-law John Pemberton Kirkland who had moved to Kentucky before becoming interested in acquiring land west of Springfield for settlement by Kentuckians!. The original Post Office building remains extant on First Avenue across from City Hall currently used as apartments! Today there are several restored buildings associated with early pioneer days including: The Old Jail (1840), James Fenton House (1860), Negrosmith shop/shopfront (c 1870s), Phelps Schoolhouse (-1910s) & General Store Building (-1920s)

The town's history is intertwined with that of its two main employers: Ford Motor Company and Monsanto Corporation. Ford moved its manufacturing operations from Toledo, Ohio to Kirkwood in 1937, while Monsanto established its research center there in 1946. Today both companies remain important parts of the town's economy; Ford employs over 2,000 people and Monsanto has a workforce of over 9,000 employees worldwide. Kirkwood has also been home to many political careers including those of several U.S. presidents (Ulysses S Grant, Franklin D Roosevelt, James K Polk) as well as multiple members of Congress (John Anderton Woodruff JR., Eleazer Morse). In recent years, Kirkwood has become known for its annual corn festival which draws large crowds each year to enjoy live music and food opportunities unavailable elsewhere within the small town limits
