Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 2,479 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Francois County seat and has a rich history dating back to 1836. In that year, General James Kirkwood founded what would become Kirkwood Academy. The school still operates today and offers education for grades Pre-K through 12th grade along with vocational training programs for businesses and other professionals. The first settlers in this area were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Illinois. They started a farm on the present day site of Kirkwood Academy and named it after General James Kirkwood's father-in-law, Drury Lane Foxcroft (1797-1868). In 1840, two brothers named John Nance opened a hatchery on the east side of town which later became known as Filson Hatchery Park. This farm remains one of the important agricultural endeavors in Kirkwood's history to this day. It also produces corn, beans, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, eggs and llamas. Another important early resident was Elisha Stevens (1800-1876), who came to live in Bushnellville around 1820 from Warrenton Township near Nashville Tennessee. He built his house on what is now State Route J about three miles north of town on an upland parcel that he bought from Colfax Smith for $5 per acre . Stevens managed much of the land around here until his death in 1876 when it passed into hands of his descendants

Kirkwood is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,348 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Kirkwood was James Mott who arrived in 1834. Mott was an ordained minister and also a surveyor, helping to lay out the town lots. He named it after his brother, John Kirkwood (1792-1868), a general in the Union army during the American Civil War and later governor of Kansas City Mott's son-in-law Ephraim Hallett came to Kirkwood about 1840 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1846, he married Anna Maria Keyes, daughter of Colonel Elijah Keyes of nearby Carthage Township (). Anna Maria keyed up with her husband to start a family and they started raising chickens on their farmstead until Major General David Dixon offered them land for farming on which they founded Dixonville () on November 15, 1847 (). Dixonville became an important crossroads where farmers from various parts of Missouri met for trade and commerce.In 1865 Josephine "Jenny" Hardesty moved from Anoka County, Minnesota to Dixonville with her three children: Alva Harding (), Ralph Harding (), and Mary Jane Harding (); she started a grocery store there that still stands today (). Mrs. Harding ran it until her death in 1951(). The first school within Kirkwood was established by private students tired of waiting for government schools to open up near them (). Classes were held every other day at Mr. Kelley's home until September 1861 when building permits were obtained for the new school building which would be known as "Stroudsburg". classroom space was rented from local farmer Reverend Wm Caughey ()) until May 1865 when both buildings burned down due to weather conditions; however lessons continued using substitute teachers (). The first high school diploma awarded in Kirkwood was given to Miss Clara Barton () by Governor Daniel Webster () on October 8th 1870 (). Mrs. Barton financed the construction of four more classrooms for Grades 9-12 at $1 per student per term starting February 3rd 1871 (); these classrooms are now known as Old Main School & Recital Hall . On April 6th 1897 Kirtland Ayer published "A History of American Agriculture" (Waco Press) which includes an article about "the early growth and development of agricultural colleges outside America." This article mentions that "a group led by Revd Wm Caughlin [of Dixonville] designed and erected (an old brick structure) near present day Old Main Schoolhouse", marking the first time such an educational institution had been constructed inside what is now Stark County.,During World War I manyofKirkwood's men enlisted or served in military units across America including members of Company F2/5th Missouri Infantry Regiment (), Company G3/7th Illinois Infantry Regiment (), Battalion D4/16th Iowa Infantry Regiment ({}-- most likely {?}, Captain John Pyle })and Lieutenant Colonel George Smedley'divisional commando unit called 'The Forty Thieves'. After the war ended many returned home but one resident Captains John Pyle ([?])and George Smedley remain unaccounted for even though federal indictments have been filed against them since World War II
Kirkwood was founded by John Kirkwood in 1824. A post office was established in 1829, and the town grew rapidly until it reached its peak around 1850. The population had reached over 10,000 by 1860, but decreased to 7,500 by 1870. Kirkwood's decline began soon after; the center of town slowly dried up as people left for moreogi or other opportunities in nearby towns. In the 1920s and 1930s, the community experienced a small resurgence with development of new businesses and housing. However, during World War II Kirkwood was hit hard with military action and low-level bombing which destroyed many homes and businesses. The community slowly declined again before reaching its present state in the late 1960s when new development began to bring new life to the town.
