A fire destroyed most of downtown Kirkwood on November 2nd 1913; however, because there was no insurance industry then like we have now with fire insurance companies or limits on how much damage can be done by fires, most all buildings sustained only superficial damage from that blaze including one store building which still stands today! That building still has its lettering from when it housed The Star Newspaper back when it didn't burn down! On April 26th 2003 a large tornado touched down just north of town center damaging several homes but not killing anyone due to good positioning by local responders who anticipated such an event based off past experience with similar tornadoes happening nearby! This tornado also left two bridges over I-55 cracked open allowing water access into town for firefighters!.

As one of the most important transportation hubs in central Missouri during the early 19th century, Kirkwood had a significant impact on local economic development. In 1818, Indian trader Elijah Ford built a mill here which became known as Ford's Mill after him. This milling industry continued until about 1840 when it switched to cotton production due to increased demand from Europe for silk fabric imported from China. In 1853, settlers started moving into what is now Kirkwood from other parts of central Missouri under the auspices of the Kansas Pacific Railroad Company. By 1870, some 1,500 people were living in Kirkwood with 100 businesses and $40 million worth of manufacturing output annually. At this time, Kirkytown (as Kirkwood was then called) also boasted an extensive public school system with over 200 students and 12 teachers; four churches; two postmasters; three jailers; and six firemen/women). The community experienced growth through annexation by other towns throughout its history but remained relatively small until after World War II when it exploded with growth due to farm-to-table cuisine becoming popularized in nearby Springfield while residents began suburbanizing around it for political reasons (trips to Springfield became increasingly expensive). As more families moved into town they started developing new industries such as textiles and plastics manufacture as well as real estate development including homes for professionals working at nearby universities or state agencies such as Highway Patrolrons or State troopers stationed at various intersections within town limits (the process by which these services are provided has come to be known locally as "Kirkwood apartheid"). Today much like before it has struggled with recent economic downturns however some resurgence including several grocery stores being opened along Airport Road near High School along with several restaurants featuring local food products; renovated historical buildings such as Old Mill Tavern & Bakery where live music is regularly performed monthly during summertime events; new parks have been erected including one equipped with both water jets and bike lanes providing easy access for locals & tourists alike while still preserving many historic features such as original plank floors
