During World War I (1914-18), many soldiers from neighboring towns enlisted here to help fight on various fronts including those serving at Camp Chase west of town where they would sleep under canvas tents then march into battle early morning before returning home to dinner time! Many veterans returned home wounded which had a significant impact on both military morale and civilian support for war efforts! On December 12th 1916 President Woodrow Wilson announced he would visitSalineCounty during his trip through central Missouri that same year! After meeting with Mayor Clements and other officials from Saline County he delivered remarks before traveling back east to New York City two days later! This historic event marked not only an important national visit but also an occasion when men from all around Central Missouri came together to show support for their neighbor across the river!!! Many businesses grew out of operations during World War I such as Pecan Mills which became one of largest producers of candy bars nationwide; Krantz Drug Store which sold gasoline, tires, vacuum cleaners etc.; Post Office Service which distributed food parcels; Biggins Hardware store which produced woodturning tools; Stroud Electric Supply Cooperative; Knights Templar Masonic Lodge #1 - located just south side Of Main Street across from grocery store - active members provided entertainment nightly throughout WWI while troops mobilized nearby barracks; Presbyterian Church building erected primarily due to financial contributions from Mrs John Ransom who resided just north side OF Main Street opposite bank) . Some residents even took advantage of wartime shortages by starting their own businesses like Disinfectant Factory #2 (now known as Marshall's Cleaners); August sewing factory started up by Mrs Lillie Goodloe after her husband lost his job because supplies arrived too late for another company order). An additional eight businesses opened up following World War II: five retail stores (+ one service station), four manufacturing plants (+ two machine shops), one farm + two barns/campsites
