The first European settlers in Kirkwood were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1785. The first post office was established in 1819. The present town was founded on April 14, 1875 by Wm. H. Kirkwood and Jesse Treadway as a result of a merger of two towns - Unity and Woodbury - within Scott County. In 1886, William Soper founded the first general store in Kirkwood and it still stands today as one of the most important businesses in the community. In 1898, local farmers formed what became known as "The Farmers' League" to promote land reform which led to increased production on farms throughout the area and helped to create an agrarian society that continues to this day. Kirkwood has been hosting agricultural fairs since 1915 and has become well-known for its produce festivals which include the Iowa Corn Show each year (the largest corn exposition in North America) and The Great American Pumpkin Festival which takes place during October each year.

One of the early pioneers to live in Kirkwood was John Dickson, who arrived in 1836 and started a tannery on Union Street. The town reached its peak growth during the late 1800s due to heavy production of cotton from the nearby plantations that were run by slaveowners. However, as America began to become industrialized and rural life changed, agricultural production declined and casualties from World War I increased demand for local labor on the farms that had been destroyed by war effort; this led to a decline in population and businesses within Kirkwood until its revival during the 1920s as an independent community with its own school system and government services During World War II, many veteran families returned home to take up farming after being discharged from service; this led to another increase in population within Kirkwood during the postwar years until it reached its current level around 2000 when most residents left for other communities throughout Missouri due to economic opportunities available elsewhere Though primarily known for agriculture today, there has been some development over the years including: aluminum smelting operations which began working onsite near town limits in 1951; a grocery store opened near town limits in 1978; an auto dealership opened adjacent to Ashland Mall southeast of town beginning sales activity there starting in 1984; construction began on a new high school (now renamed Middleton High School) inside of an old church located east side of town beginning enrollment activities there starting fall 2006; additions commenced at both schools including building two playgrounds as well as several basketball courts/tracks - one located just south of Main Street between Church Road and Old Hwy 190 while also adding numerous classrooms, offices and other amenities . The decline seen over recent decades can be partially attributed to changing demographics with more people moving away from rural areas into larger cities such as Springfield or Jackson across state lines leading directly or indirectly to job loss along with less infrastructure available for agricultural production so much so that even large inputs such as water are no longer needed these days making it difficult if not impossible anymore for farmers even if they have any land at all ; furthermore changes occurring within American society overall such events like automation reducing need now day especially given advances made elsewhere make this trend even more pronounced . Today's economy is driven largely by defense spending related industries however despite this some remaining jobs are becoming increasingly automated which could lead eventually towards layoffs soon if not already occurrence depending upon future advancements
