Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 3,498 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Kirkwood was made on May 10, 1837 by John Ralston and his family when they left Benton County for what is now southwestern Arkansas. They named their new town after General James Kirkland who had fought with them in the Mexican-American War. Kirkwood's growth as a community can be dated to its incorporation as a city on March 1, 1907. At that time it consisted of just over one hundred residents and had a total assessed valuation of $10,000. However, despite its early successes as an incorporated municipality, Kirkwood experienced several setbacks during the 1920s and 1930s due to World War II shortages of food and housing stock in Springfield at that time. In 1948 however, Mayor Harry Flowers announced that the city would no longer seek annexation from other municipalities because "the people here have always done very well." Kirkwood was platted in 1836 and named for General James Kirkwood, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Kirkwood was established in 1838. Kirkwood has a long history as an agricultural center with crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton and wheat being grown throughout its years of existence. In recent years however, the industry that has sustained Kirkwood has been manufacturing; notably by producing clothing for both men and women across a wide range of styles and prices. The Kirkwoods are descendants of Captain John Kirkwood (1778-1846), one of American independence's most accomplished military figures during the War of 1812 and afterward. After service as a captain in the Illinois Volunteer Militia under General Anthony Wayne (1796-1860), Captain Kirkwood came to Missouri in 1830 to purchase land near present day Kirkwood from his brother-in-law David Brownell (1792-1868). He founded what became known as "The Green Mill" on what would become Samuel Holmes Road south of town on December 15th 1830; he also built a gristmill which still stands today - one of only two remaining commercial buildings from that time period still standing within reach of modern day Townspeople! Captain John's daughter Sarah married Colonel Isaac Sibley (1787-1859) on November 12th 1836; they moved their family to nearby Florissant when Sibley became Governor pro tempore for Warren County three years later on January 6th 1840 after serving as Secretary of State under Daniel Boone (1775-1862). Under Governor Sibley's leadership much progress was made with regards to education and culture within The Green Mill community - including construction projects such as an addition to the main building which doubled as their library/bookstore/theater until it burned down circa 1860 (!); also significant were new waterworks installed adjacent to Holmes Road which allowed for increased production at "The Green Mill"; furthermore, musical entertainment featuring local talent began appearing here regularly beginning circa 1840 courtesy OFD music hall! In 1850 Commander Lucius Nolen Pike arrived from Kentucky via Hannibal Bridge - his wagon load full of supplies necessary for rebuilding following Arapaho Wars – headed directly into town through North Market Street upon reaching The Green Mill; he had heard about Pike's Raids against Osage Indians occurring east of town some weeks earlier! Upon arrival many resident citizens gathered around him seeking news or instructions regarding this latest development; nonetheless nothing ever eventuated resulting not only becauseof Pike's lack thereof but also due to unfavorable weather conditions prevailing at that time! Eventually hostilities ceased between Americans & Native Americans leading all factions eventually disbanding less than 2 months later following Battle Creek Massacre aka Pontiac's Rebellion!! In 1861 neighboring townsfolk alighted torches onto Government House located just northward along Old US Route 66 plaza some blocks eastof current day Main Street - effectively condemning it & ensuing destruction thereto resultant during Union occupation !! consequent loss/damage total amountingto $100,-(!!) & numerous historical artifacts lost thereby!!! Consequently Post Office #1 reopened promptlyulerly #2 followed suit 3 days later effective February 14th 1861!! subsequently becoming ---'StL MO Corrisponding UPPERCASE--- kirkmomansilvia@hotmail
