In 1841, George and Priscilla's son James also moved to Kirkwood and began farming the land around their cabin. In 1861, when Missouri became an Confederate state, most of central Arkansas except for parts of Springfield went with the Confederacy. So too did Kirkwood; its residents voted to remain Unionist. When Missouri became a Republican state in 1865, many Arkansans followed suit and chose to become Republicans rather than become Confederates again. The post office was established at Kirkwood in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued by mail service in 1934. Kirkwood has had two churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1906) and Presbyterian church (founded 1881). The post office was originally called "Church." The current name is based on the town's history as well as its location within Springfield-Central Kansas metropolitan area which has its own post office with that name since 1907

The first permanent settler in Kirkwood was Peter Kirkwood, who arrived in 1811. He built a cabin on an old farm that still stands today. In 1814, he married Anna (née Ford) and founded the village of Kirkwood with their two children—Peter and Anna's brother John—on land that now includes parts of Springfield. The original courthouse in Kirkwood was destroyed by fire in 1872. A new courthouse was built on State Route 66 just south of town and opened in 1874. The cornerstone for the new courthouse was laid by President Ulysses S. Grant on Sept 24, 1870. It soon became apparent that this new courthouse would be too large for the small town and it was rebuilt as a one-story frame building on Main Street about 1912-13 using funds from a local landowner named Wm Hite Jr.. It remained active until 1978 when it was replaced by a new building which still serves as the town hall today. In 1915, president Woodrow Wilson spent his final days before leaving office at an hotel near Columbia University after winning re-election over Governor James Moseley (D). When Wilson arrived at the hotel he saw that all but one room had been rented out for $10 per night! As Wilson walked up to rooms 109 and 110 he remarked "This looks like my boyhood home". Central closed its doors in 2009 but Blackhawk remains open today as Graystone Academy Southfield Jr./Sr.). Kirkwood, Missouri was founded in 1829 by Captain Lewis Kirkwood and his family. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Missouri River and its natural resources. In 1836, the Kirkwood brothers built a mill on the river. The mill continued to grow and become one of the largest in the area. In 1870, Captain Kirkwood made his final donation to the town and it became an incorporated municipality.
