Kirkwood, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,909 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by James Kirkwood and his brothers. The name of the town comes from its location on a fork in the road between Stonington and Independence (now Independence Heights). The first post office was established in Kirkwood on October 12, 1837. In 1839, the first school opened in Kirkwood. In 1847, a sawmill was built in Kirkwood and became one of the largest employers in the community. The mill closed in 1938. The Tillman family ran a bakery from 1900 to 1940s which is now known as Mrs. John's Bakery & Cafe inside of Lincoln Elementary School across from Main Street Stationer's Store. In 1942, when World War II began, local residents formed an air-raid shelter known as "the hole." More than 2,000 people were sheltered during the war here including many who would later make significant contributions to society such as entrepreneur Driscoll Dixon and businesswoman Sadie Nicholas-Dixon-Ferguson. Afterward, many residents left for military service specifically because they felt it would be more patriotic to do so than stay home; however most returned after hostilities ended. Kirkwood has been home to city government since 1925 when it was incorporated as a village under state law No. 927; however this incarnation ceased operations due to budget cuts that coincided with nationwide economic decline during that period The city then became an unincorporated part of Jackson County effective January 1st 1959 through consolidation with nearby towns Hebbronville (population 3) and Montrose (population 5). On July 11th 2013 following years long discussion by all three villages KWV had merged into Jackson County effectiveJanuary 1st 1959 providing all citizens with one municipal government for their entire county!
