Kirkwood is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield- watered area. The town was founded in 1837 by John Kirkwood and his family. George W. Jones and his family arrived in 1846 and started farming the land around present day Kirkwood Road and Highway 138. In 1865, Isaac Asbury built a cabin on what is now Main Street near what is now Park Avenue. By 1870, most of the original settlers had left for various reasons such as bad times at home or opportunity in other towns nearby. But some stayed to start new businesses such as a doctor's office, general store and livery stable that still stands today along with two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1871) and Second Baptist Church (founded in 1877). The first schools were established in Kirkwood when Mrs. Elizabeth Woolridge donated land to be set aside for public education which included a schoolhouse, teacher's cottage, one acre of ground for tobacco culture, four acres for corn Culture, five acres for hogsheads of water per annum each also to be used for instruction purposes only until further notice then it would revert back to her husband John Kirkwood who would hold title until his death A school house/pumpkin patch are still extant on Green Street served by Gradeschool students from surrounding communities

Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 5,736 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Kirkwood in 1838 as a result of his land purchase from the Osage Indian tribe. He named it after himself and his father, James Kirkwood. The first store in Kirkwood opened its doors in 1840. By 1865, the town had a school and four churches. There were also several businesses including a mill and a bakery that functioned until the late 1800s. In 1872, entrepreneur Emmett O'Neill developed what would become Kempner County while living in nearby Springfield. After some years of effort, he nominated Kirkwood for county seat but it wasn't accepted because Springfield already had an established government center there (the first courthouse was built in 1868). O'Neill then submitted plans for what would become Kirkwood – one of many villages set up around Springfield during this time period to serve as retail centers and serve as sources of income for residents who worked outside of town or who didn't have enough money to maintain their own home/businesses closer to downtown Springfield. The first stores inside today's boundaries of Kirkwood opened on Main Street just south of US Highway 362 on December 5, 1899; these stores were known as "The Gents." A post office operated from 1902-1911 before being moved to its present location on Store Street in 1915 after becoming too small inside the original building (it still uses this name today). In 1927, when main street became US Highway 362 eastbound only access between Main and Store Streets existed due to construction along that highway which cut off most of downtown from northsouth traffic; since then Merchants Row has been accessed by coming down Market Street eastward from US Highway 362 westbound (still accessible via Market Street today). Kirkwood experienced growth during World War II with almost 2,000 citizens joining forces to contribute their time and resources towards either service or production within the war effort. One such individual was Mayor Harry Johnson who served from 1942-1945 responsible for all aspects related to city government including planning development initiatives such as providing affordable housing developments called "Homes without Walls" throughout much of central Missouri which assisted those affected by Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts back home across America Johnson left office following Turney's victory during the 1945 general election but not before carrying out many citywide projects like erecting more than 100 streetlights throughout downtown Kirkgood using donated funds raised through various events like car wash nights where people brought their cars into town for cleaning etcetera . During his time as mayor there were also several major changes made to City Hall including new roofs put on interior walls and an addition upstairs that housed both City Council chambers plus an information desk giving Residents easy access to all city services even if they weren't currently visiting
Kirkwood was founded in 1835 by George Kirkwood. The town became a post office in 1846, and was named for James Kirkwood, an early settler. The first store opened in the town in 1847. By 1860, the population of Kirkwood had grown to over 100 residents. The town saw its first growth spurt during the late 1800s as a result of timber production. In 1898, Kirkwood hosted the Miss America pageant and won the title of "Missouri's Second City." During World War II, Kirkwood served as a stop on the supply route that connected Missouri with Nazi Germany. In 1951, Kirkwood voters passed a ordinance declaring themselves a "de facto city" within their own boundaries. In 1970, the city annexed part of neighboring Ferguson. In 2001, following passage of MO statute 6507 concerning annexation petitions from cities without city charter status (such as Kirkwood), Ferguson replaced Kirkwood as the de facto City government for all residents within its borders - including those living inside but not incorporated within Ferguson's limits (though they are still considered citizens of their respective cities).
