The history of Kirkwood, Missouri can be traced back to 1836 when the town was founded by James Kirkwood and his wife, Eliza. The first post office in the town was established in 1846. In 1870, a small sawmill was built in Kirkwood and continued operation until it closed down in 1903. In 1907, Kirkwood became a city and its first mayor was W. D. McKenzie. The city limits were expanded in 1912 when the addition of what is now known as North Side added to the city limits. The population of Kirkwood increased rapidly during World War I due to military recruitment and growth from agricultural production. By 1920, the population had reached 30,000 people and by 1930 it had grown to 60,000 people. In 1945, Kirkwood became an independent municipality and its first mayor was Harry Latham (D). During the 1950s and 1960s, meatpacking plants were built in the town which led to economic decline during that decade. However, since the early 2000s there has been renewed economic development with new restaurants being opened as well as new housing developments being constructed on North Side streets near central business district
Kirkwood, Missouri is located in the state of Missouri. The population was 9,309 at the 2010 census. As of the census of 2000, there were 8,521 people living in Kirkwood. In the early 1800s, this area was a part of what is now St. Louis County. When that county was created in 1829, it included all of present-day Kirkwood as well as parts of Webster and Ray counties. The town began to form after fur trader George Denny founded a store here in 1793. Denny's store became one of the first businesses to open in what is now Kirkwood. Over time, other stores and businesses followed suit; by 1830, there were 10 businesses operating hereabouts. By 1840, the population had increased to 20 families and 2 churches! The first post office established in Kirkwood was on May 2nd, 1834; it operated for just over a year before being discontinued due to lack of customers! The first school opened here on September 8th, 1835; it was called "George Washington School." It burned down soon after its opening but reopened under new management on December 5th with grade levels 1-8! This school would eventually be renamed "Kirkwood schools" when that name came into common use throughout the area during World War II ( K-12). As Kirkmountain grew older and more popular among residents for its natural beauty and interesting history*, residents voted to incorporate as a town on November 3rd, 1865! At this point only present-day Webster County remained unincorporated along with parts of Ray County including portions currently within Kirkwood limits - making up today's third branch line ( colored ) community known as Ferguson Township - so named because Dr. James Ferguson donated land for that purpose on which their township sat! *It should be noted that even though many aspects about life in pre- incorporation days remain unchanged today within Kirkmountain/Ferguson Township/Ray County inhabitants continue quite active politically* . Many business owners closed their doors during Reconstruction following the end of slavery & prior thereto some African Americans left our area specificallysearching for opportunities elsewhere due to Jim Crow laws enacted shortly thereafter

Kirkwood, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,949 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Samuel Kirkwood, an early settler. The first white European to enter what is now Kirkwood was John Beck who came overland from Illinois in 1819. A post office called Kirkwood was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The first school in what is now Kirkwood was a one-room log cabin built by John Beck on the banks of the Potomac River about 1827. A gristmill and sawmill were built soon afterwards on the creek nearby and began to produce flour for local Consumption before also supplying goods to Springfield and other towns in central Missouri. In 1857, when Jesse Livermore became Governor of Missouri, he ordered all state agencies within five miles (8 km) of Carthage to move their headquarters there due to Strikes throughout the state by farmworkers across various sectors including but not limited to cotton plantations near Richmond Hill outside of Petersburg Landing which had been under cultivation since 1795 as part of a land grant from James Kippenberger to Anthony Todd IIITodd’s father-in-law Daniel Boone IIBoone had acquired 2 million acres (10 km2) of land east of Carthage via purchase from Captain James Kippenberger on April 12, 1794 during his expedition led by Pierre Lacrosse carrying out President Adams’ Order No 9080 directed at “all British subjects living upon or having influence over any Indian tribe within this territory”… In 1830 Josephine Boonesaid niece married Archibald Mclntyreof Scots descent born about 1800at Fort Pittsylvania near Point Defiance Indianaand removed with her husband & familyto Virginia where they resided until she died circa 1840 accompanied by 3 children: Isabella Ann Mclntyreborn December 26th 1830; Peter John Boonesaid January 8th 1835; Francis Scott Key Iborn November 7th 1840). For many years prior to that date they resided at Mount Hope Plantation near Lexington Kentucky…. In1857 Jesse Livermore sent order stating that all state agencies should move away from Richmond Hill due to strikes then going on throughout the state resulting in loss of revenue He asked Captain Smith if we could send someone else? Which Captain Smith told Jesse that we already have another agency located just southwest Of Richmond Hill And That's why We Can't Move! This event set off a chain reaction leading eventually to 25 counties moving their agencies away from Pulaski County including Ashville MO,, Florissant MO,, Lebanon MO,, Marshalltown IA,, Independence MO,, Hannibal NE,. All these changes meant less work for locals available jobs didn't always match up with new places developments were happening so people moved back into their homes some bringing animals with them while others left altogether creating a community full of history
Kirkwood was founded in 1839 by Captain James Kirkwood and his wife, Martha. The first store in the town was a grocery store. In 1901, the city of Kirkwood was established, and the first mayor was J.B. Gaylord. In 1916, the city annexed the neighboring town of Chatfield to become Kirkwood-Chatfield County.
