Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Kirkwood was James Kirkwood who arrived in 1836. He and his wife were the parents of four children: John (1837-1915), Lucilla Jane (1839-1924), Anna Maria (1841-1926) and James Everett Kirkwood (1843-1920). In 1854, David Overton purchased land from James Kirkwood and laid out a townsite on what is now Main Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets. The Overton family ran the businesses that dot Main Street today - David's grocery store on Seventh Street near its junction with EighthStreet, Mrs. Overton's school for girls on NinthStreet near her home intersection with Tenth Avenue, and Mr. Overton's sawmill on Eleventh Street just south of Highway 362 which still stands today as an industrial structure. In 1857, Rachel Drake bought property northeast of Main Street from Mrs. Overton for $1 per acre; she opened her own school in what is now Drake Elementary School in 1865 and added another classroom to the building in 1907 when she leased space from Mrs.Overton’s teacher’s union hall across Sixth Avenue from her school site. She also operated a general store next door to her school until 1901 when she sold it to Averill Gentry who moved his business into it until he discontinued operations in 1929 due to economic difficulties; then it became an office building known as Gentry & Drake Advertising Agency which was located there until 1984 when it was razed to make way for Interstate 70 traffic expansion Project I-70 East projectionsPhase 2 near Maple Grove Drive at NinthStreet; then it became known as Kirtland Community Center before being vacated by the municipality and becoming abandoned again." "Kirkwood Historic District" According to the United States National Register of Historic Places listings data, there are 171 properties listed within the district including 64 buildings that date back to 1792 or earlier; all but two were built by members of oneof two families who founded this community: Obadiah Cardenbach Sr., age 72 when he platted what would become Kirkwood Township on August 22nd, 1800 according to wikiHow;and Samuel Morse Cardenbach II Sr., age 15 when he did so also according to wikiHow – both his fathers had done planting/grading work for local farmer Daniel McIntosh during 1800 western migration + “the great Purchasing expedition under Govt Order 9 May 1785” so they must have been pretty experienced frontiersmen especially given their ages! There are some excellent old photos online documenting various aspects of life here during those early days such as pioneer wagon trains arriving each day laden with goods destined for Judge William Hinkle's new township just east of present day downtown KCMO! Each wagon bed carried several cans or gallons of water enough for 8 people working all day long dismantling/assembling cannonsball carriages cannonballs & other artillery pieces etc...& finally loading them onto wagons again each evening headed back home sick or rested past sunset! This entire process took many days sometimes weeks even months!! WWII brought many alterations too e example increased production rates @ nearby munitions plants giving rise to nickname " munitions city" thanks no doubt ! Kirkwood is a small community in Clark County, Missouri, about 12 miles northeast of the city of St. Louis. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It was named for Captain James Kirkwood who fought in the Mexican–American War and in the Civil War. The town was founded in 1859 by John Clements and his brother-in-law Reuben Wright. They named it after Captain James Kirkwood who had died in a skirmish near here two years earlier. The first store there was built on the corner of Eighth Street and Market Square (later Grand Boulevard). In 1861, construction began on what would become Kirkwood's first school which opened in 1865. In 1872, Kirkwood became one of six townships within Clark County when it was created from parts of three previous counties. It remained an unincorporated community until 1912 when its incorporation into the City of St Louis were granted by a local judge pursuant to a state law that allowedTownships to be formed within Counties without their approval. In 1922, Kirkwood's post office moved from its original location on Market Square to what is now Fourth Street because postal service had been discontinued between Stroudsburg and downtown Saint Louis due to low mail volumes thereabouts. The old building still stands today as part of the town hall complex which also includes a gymnasium and other buildings used by businesses and government agencies including the Saint Louis Regional Airport Authority since 1979 Kirkwood has experienced several periods of growth and decline over its history; however, overall it has maintained close ties with surrounding communities including Stroudsburg and Saint Louis throughout most of this time frame
