Kirkwood, Missouri is a town in Morgan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morgan County. In 1838, the area now known as Kirkwood was part of Clay Township. When that township changed name to Kirkwood in 1868, it was part of Posey County. In 1875, parts of Posey and Randolph counties were combined to form Morgan County. The townships of Posey and Randolph each had 3 blocks square with a population of 100 souls in 1840; this increased to 406 by 1860; 812 by 1870; 1078 by 1880; 1224 by 1890; and 1440 by 1908. By 1900 the population had decreased to 653 due largely to migration from central Missouri (and Iowa) intoMorgan County during that decade. The first school in what is now Kirkwood dates back to 1853 when a small log cabin School House was built on land donated by Reverend John Fenton and his wife Anna Fenton. A second school building also served as a Methodist Church until 1906 when it burned down which led to its replacement with the present day courthouse building which opened in 1907. The first post office in what is now Kirkwood was established on October 15, 1850, with Wm Haggerty serving as the first officeholder Kirkwood grew rapidly during the early days of radio broadcasting thanks to Alexander Graham Bell’s efforts for SSB Radio Corporation In 1925 there were 9 businesses operating within 1 mile radius including an ice cream parlor The original main street running through town was renamed Main Street West after Gussie Kinnear who became Mayor in 1951 Today much of downtown Kirkwood remains unchanged with only minor changes made over time: The Courthouse still offers excellent access for tourists while portions of Main Street have been turned into retail corridors marketed towards locals or people who work Downtown
