Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri. It was founded in 1837 by Captain James Kirkwood and his family. The first store in Kirkwood was built on the corner of First and Main Streets. In 1875, the town had two stores and four homes. By 1910, the population had increased to over 1,000 people and there were six businesses in Kirkwood. In 1915, the first rifle company in America was formed at Kirkwood High School by students from local schools. The company served honorably for many years until it disbanded during World War II due to lack of equipment. In 1951, the school board raised money to purchase a new rifle range which opened in 1953. The current rifle range is one of the oldest continuously running ranges in America. Kirkwood has been home to several major firearms manufacturers including Colt Arms Company (1902-present), Remington Arms Company (1899-1959), Savage Arms Company (1889-1934), Winchester Repeating Arms Company (1886-1903) and finally Smith & Wesson Corporation (1913-present). There are also numerous smaller manufacturers that have played important roles within this community over time such as: Adler Firearms Manufacturing Co.; American Machine & Tool Works; Barclay's Department Store; Brooks Brothers Shooting Supply; City National Bank; Citizens National Bank; David Cockerill Armoury & Ammunition Emporium; Duncan's Hardware Store; Ford Motor Co.; Goodrich Tire & Rubber Co.; International Harvester Corporation; Joplin Arsenal Ammunition Plant - now Alcoa Aluminum Division ; Knoxville Arsenal Ammunition Plant - now Raytheon Missile Systems Division ; Noble Gunnery School - closed 1990s Allied War Production Commission contracts with various munitions manufacturers for production of ammunition for both Allied forces fighting overseas as well as civilian use during World War II
