Kirksville, Missouri is a small town located in Greene County, Missouri. The population was 2,463 at the 2010 census. Kirksville is part of the Springfield-Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Kirksville were farmers who came from Kentucky and Virginia. They started out farming paddy fields and later developed into a cattle raising business. Kirksville was named after Captain John Kirkland, an early settler. In 1816, the United States purchased land adjacent to present-day Kirksville from France for $1 million dollars. The Americans built a log courthouse in 1817 and named it for Colonel John Crouch—the original incorporator of the town. In 1820, General James Ketchum moved his troops eastward from St Louis to take up arms against Native Americans in present day Kansas. Ketchum's forces skirmished with the Indian tribe known as the Osage Indians near present-day Kirksville on December 4, 1820. This event is considered to be the beginning of military action between American and Native American forces in Greene County. Aftermath of this skirmish led to several more settlements being founded around this area: Deer Lodge (1822), Springdale (1825), Rock Springs (1827), and Arlington Heights (1829). In 1830, Field Marshal Robert Ewing ordered all Native American tribes west of Arkansas River to disband or leave their homes within sixty days or face military force if they did not comply. Some chiefs chose not to disband but others decided to move their families away from their homes because they didn't have much food or shelter left them behind when they left Arkansas River Valley for good. Many people who lived near where Fields Marshal Ewing made his announcement live on until after his death in 1865 due to illness or accidents caused by contact with white people during that time period; however most of these people died before 1870 when railroads reached nearby towns like Springfield and Farmington making life much easier for those living closer by with easy access to goods & services that had once been difficult or impossible without traveling some distance away
