In 1834 citizens voted not to annex Overton County so that they could continue trading with Hannibal instead of Springfield due to concerns about competition from nearby Columbia City (). In 1840–41 a new courthouse replaced an earlier building destroyed by fire (). In 1861–1862 Union troops burned down two hundred homes in what is now downtown KirksVILLE while they were occupying Ferguson Township; this caused great outrage among local residents who had long complained about unchecked military activities near their community () . In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant landed at Memphis on his way through Missouri after defeating Confederate General Robert Ewell across Alabama and Tennessee (); upon reaching Kirksville he announced that "the war is over" (he later apologized for making this announcement). Afterward most residents chose not to return home because Reconstruction had failed to provide benefits they desired such as jobs or education opportunities (). A few returned but many moved away again during the late 19th century because there were no good prospects for finding work outside the agricultural economy ().
