In 1903, the Kirksville Rifle and Pistol Club was organized to protect local farmers from harm by shooting at game. The club purchased a shotgun and started practicing. One of their earliest members, who is buried in Kirksville, was Hiram Ruppert. In 1911, the club purchased a rifle and began practice on the farmstead where they still shoot today. The first official shooting competition took place on November 16th of that year with fifty shooters from six states participating. The event was won by A.F. King of Missouri with a score of 137 points out of a possible hundred. This event signaled the beginning of an important period in rifle and pistol history as it marked the first time rifles had been used to compete in formal events such as this one. The NRA (National Rifle Association) was founded in 1871 which helped spur interest in firearms among Americans and led to increased firearm regulation throughout America including laws governing how many rounds per hour could be fired and what type of ammunition could be shot at close range. However, these methods did not work very well because they were difficult to wear and required special equipment to use them effectively. In 1892, three men named George Ewing, John Sieving, and Frank Wheeler developed what is now known as Shooter Eye Protection system (SEP). SEP consisted of a pair of glasses with lenses that took up less space on the face than other types of eye protection and could be worn even when it was wet outside. SEP became popular among shooters because it allowed them to shoot safely with no risk of causing lens damage or blindness. The system continued to be developed until 1912 when it was replaced by modernsunglasses technology which eliminated most risks associated with traditional eye protection systems

The United States acquired this territory in 1846 via the Gadsden Purchase and Kansas became a U.S. state on January 15, 1907. The Kirksville Area Historical Society preserves and promotes the history of Kirksville through grants, donations, and public meetings annually to share information about local historical events from 1865 until the present day.
The Kirksville area was first settled in the late 1830s by pioneers from Kentucky. The area became a railroad town in 1871, and soon became a center for agriculture and industry. In 1907, Kirksville was renamed for General John F. Kirby, Jr., during World War I as part of the United States war effort.
