However, during the early 20th century growth slowed as various factors such as World War I interrupted economic development. After World War I ended in 1919, farming resumed but it did not reach its former level of success until after World War II when agricultural products became more common and trade increased which led to an increase in business activity including manufacturing companies such as Boeing (BA) . In 1955-56, Kirksville experienced another significant change when it became home to Missouri's only college of higher education - University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC). Since then Kircsvlle has undergone many changes with major expansions taking place throughout the 1990s including demolition of some buildings from its early days while new construction continues today including two large hospitals as well as multiple retail stores along Main Street
