Kirksville, Missouri is located in the Ozarks area of Missouri. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. Kirksville is a small town with a small shopping center and few other amenities. It is one of seven communities in Dixon County that are part of the Dixon-Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Kirksville were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. They founded a Methodist mission here in 1838 and named their community after patternmaker Isaac Kirkland (1785-1860). In 1855, Daniel Wesson bought 640 acres of land here for $2 per acre. This made Kirksville one of the largest towns in Dixon County. Wesson served as mayor from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1872 to 1880. He was also an Agrarian League member and helped create this rural agricultural society that flourishes today. In 1886, Jno Hockaday purchased 10 acres of land north of town for $20 per acre. This provided Hockaday with enough room to house his family and build a store on top of his home – something that had not been possible before because there was no space for stores near by! Hockaday named his new community after himself – meaning "Hooksett" – which became an official name for Kirksville until 1907 when it was changed back to its original name, Hicksville.* Today, most people who live hereabouts know just two things about their childhood hometown: that they went to school here or that their parents came from Hicksville.* There's little else left to tell them about our town's historyexcept perhaps some stories about pioneers like Daniel Wesson or Jno Hockaday who redefined life within these walls.* * renamed back to Hooksett following 107 years

Kirksville is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,549 at the 2010 census. Kirksville was founded in 1838 by John Kirks and his wife Rebecca. It was named for George Washington Kirks, who served as a captain in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Kirksville was established in 1843. It was called "New Market." The name of the town changed several times until it became "Kirksville" in 1851 when it incorporated as a village. In 1924, the village adopted its current name of "Kirksville." The town is located on State Route 506 between I-435 and US 71/I-635 and has a total area of . It contains two businesses: Kiro's Canteen & Grill and Great Western Cafe & Bakery. Kirksville is also home to significant numbers of farmers and ranchers who produce crops such as hay, corn, wheat, soybeans, apples, carrots, potatoes and other vegetables.

However, World War I setbacks led to economic decline in Kirksville during the 1920s and 1930s; however, recent revitalization has returned much of what once characterized this community as an active cultural center with several excellent restaurants and businesses.
