The milling industry rapidly developed around this time throughout much of Iowa and Illinois due to increased demand from export markets following completion of the American Civil War Several mills were built near Ames – Weirton, Oskaloosa & Fort Dodge – but these did not achieve significant commercial success until after World War II when prices increased significantly with better transportation infrastructure thanks to advances in technology.
