The town was founded in 1838 by John Kirks and his wife Catharine. One of the important shows in early Kirksville was the Grand Review of America which took place on September 8, 1839. Two years later, on October 10th, 1841, Kircsville became a post office with the name "Kirksville." In 1865, John and Catharine's son Samuel married Sarah Stephenson who gave birth to six children: Catharine (1866-1934), Jno., Eliza (1868-1949), Clara (1870-1956), Mary Jane (1872-1958), and Everett Vail (1874-1964). On January 6th 1870, Sarah died giving birth to their seventh child: Meta Stephenson Kirksville. After her death, Meta adopted her brother's two children from his first marriage: Gertrude Golding and Clifford Stephenson Kirksville Jr.. Because of this adoption ceremonyMeta also became mother to three stepchildren: Linnie Gillespie Hoyt (born December 3rd 1907), Elliott Coleman Hoyt (January 16th 1909 - June 15th 1990) and Donald Coleman Hoyt II(February 14th 1912 - April 2nd 1986). With all these kids around she had to take care of them alone when her husband got sick or away on business so she could continue making money as a milliner until he retired in 1948. In 1962 there were only 372 people living in Phelps County while it had a population of 902 according to the census taken that year. However by 2000 there were 1,814 residents living in Phelps County with a total economy that totaled $2 million dollars . Most people here are farmers who grow corn, wheat and soybeans along with some cattle farming operations The main industry now for most people here is retail trade although there are some businesses such as an auto parts store that has been around since before World War II The old courthouse which still stands today served as the town hall for many years There are several schools including Our Lady Of Providence Catholic School which offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; Central High School where grades nine through twelve offer classes including math/science/engineering/commerce; Stonington Presbyterian Church which offers worship services weekdays 9am to 11am; Callahan Baptist Church which specializes in preaching sermons about Bible stories during Lent; as well as other religious groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses who meet every Wednesday at 7pm inside Callahan Baptist Church There are several churches associated with Kilkey Funeral Home across from Central High School where family members can come visitation hours beginning at 4pm each day until they leave at midnight
