Kirksville, Missouri is a town in Butler County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Kirksville was founded in 1835 and named for George Washington Kirkpatrick. The first settler in Kirksville was James Gentry who built a log cabin on the north side of the Poshocton River. He and his wife were the first white people to live in what would become Kirksville. In 1836, David Hensley started a small farm near present-day Kirksville and named it after his father-in-law, John Hensley. David Hensley had come to Missouri from Kentucky as a boy with his family during the American Revolution. He had married Mary Todd Lincoln while she was still living at Mount Vernon with her husband, President Abraham Lincoln's older brother John Wilkes Booth; they would later have three children together: Tad (1863–1944), Donald (1915–1994) and Alice (1868–1945). In 1837, Isaac McCoy established an alluvial farming community west of present day Kirksville on land that he donated to the United States government in recognition of his military service during the Mexican–American War. The town name derived from its location - close to two major rivers which emptied intoMissouri - and McCoy's donation designation as "Kirkpatrick Valley." The townsite grew rapidly due to its many natural resources including coal and cotton plantations until it became too costly to maintain such large communities by hand; this led to organized land acquisition beginning about 1840 which culminated with purchase of 1 million acres (500 km²) by Jesse Lummis in 1865 from Peter Kornheiser for $2 per acre ($10 per hectare). This allowed for planned growth within designated borders rather than reliance upon agricultural production or hunting/fishing resources which could be affected by political changes or weather conditions

The town grows quickly and soon has a population of over 100 people. Kirksville becomes an important trading post and manufacturing center in central Missouri. It is also home to the first school in central Missouri.
