Cooke was impressed with what he saw and made an offer for land that would eventually form part of Springfield Township. In 1865, David Fenton established one of America's first two cotton ginneries in Kirksville- now called Fenton Cotton Ginnery Museum which still operates today. The mill operated successfully until 1902 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills across Missouri Valley region. In 1907, construction started on an addition to the old mill which became known as "The Big House". It remains one of only a few buildings remaining from this era in KirksVILLE history! A general store opened up just south of present day Interstate 270 and Highway 10 near where US 70 crosses over into Raccoon County shortly after World War II ended; this store continued operation until around 1970s when it closed down completely due to lack of customers or interest from local landowners (the property has been used for various agricultural purposes ever since). This store building still stands today - viewable from I-270/10 & Old Hwy 10! In 1957- 1959 A new school was built east off U S 70 about 5 miles west of current day Town Square & replaced an earlier school that had been destroyed by fire years earlier! That same year also saw completion Of OurMothersHouse Church which is now home to Holy Redeemer Parish (a small Catholic congregation) & St John's Episcopal School which serves both Sacred Heart Parish (& adjacent lots) within its boundaries! Also That Year We welcoming our newest member To Our community Father Edward Jorgensen who came From Canada via Ellis Island! Father Edward soon became Pastor Of Our Mother's House Church! During Those Years There Was One Other Newcomer To Our Community Who Came From Illinois As Well As Another Canadian Father Who blessed Our Parish With His Presence Right After Mass On Easter Sunday...That man Was Father George Washington Dorman!! father George soon became pastor Of Holy Redeemer parish as well as rector Of St John's Episcopal School!!
