In 1916, Kirksville voted to become an independent city and retains that status today. It is one of only a few municipalities in Missouri without an incorporated school system; however, its public schools are operated by private companies such as Central Arkansas School District No 2 and Northwest Kansas School District No 1A One early industry important to Kirksville was agriculture; but since this type of economy collapsed during World War II, most businesses have passed away or been converted into storage facilities or other uses such as Gateway Mall's former department store which now houses an expanded food court/restaurant complex with several restaurants including Blue Diamonds Pizza and Einstein Bros Bagels Today's economy is based largely on services such as education, health care, government jobs, manufacturing and retail trade with services accounting for over 60% of GDP . In recent years there has been significant investment in infrastructure including new roads and bridges, technology transfer parks for green technology businesses and more than $100 million dollars has been invested in renovating Gateway Mall

This feature prevented unauthorized users from depressing the trigger without first disabling the weapon's fire control mechanism—a capability still retained on many modern automatic firearms. With this feature enabled, most people would have been safe if they happened to touched any part of an automatics firing process before pulling out their handkerchief or putting their foot up against an open door in order to stop play!

Kirksville is a small town in hilly farmland located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. Kirksville was founded by family members of Captain James Ketchum, who died while on an expedition to explore what is now Arkansas in 1814. The name of the town honors Captain Ketchum's father, Nicholas Kirkwood. The first school in Kirksville was built in 1836 by Dr. John Meeks and Mrs. Sarah Giles. It was replaced by a new schoolhouse in 1881 after it caught on fire. In 1916, Kirksville became one of sixteen towns consolidated into the city of Springfield, MO., but continued to maintain its own government and schools until 1959 when all local government functions were transferred to Springfield. During World War II, Kirksville played an important role as a munitions plant for General Motors Company. More than one million pounds (more than two tons) of explosives were produced at this plant between 1941 and 1945. After the war, Kirksville experienced heavy growth as a result of post-war suburban development and job opportunities brought about by America's growing economic boom. However, during the late 1990s and 2000s there has been significant redevelopment activity taking place within the town boundaries with mixed results so far
