He started a clearing near present day Old Town Square and named his new community after himself – Kirkwood Village (now known as Keane Park). In 1841-1842 George Cope established a gristmill on the south side of Main Street which also served as flour milling and market town center for many years before closure in 1922 because of bad water conditions; however this grain mill still stands today but converted into apartments . In 1865 Hiram Sibley founded Wabash Coal Company with coal shipping rights from Illinois through Stonington Harbor on Lake Michigan This company operated until 1903 when all operations were sold to Chicago Brick & Tile Company Also located hereabouts were two sawmills operated by James Hays at various times between 1865-1900; one still stands today with power available only during peak production hours 1860-6o2p In 1904/1905 J P Beekman organized three other companies together to take over Wabash Coal Company's shipments: Northern Railway Line Associates, American Pipe Line Associates & Southern Railway Terminal Co., finally becoming Beekman Mines Incorporated effective October 15 1905 . With these new properties came new names: Canadian National Railway (CAN), Milwaukee Road (MR) & Erie Railroad (ER) These companies had their terminals located at old town square including Canacastle Terminal which would later become Amherst Portage Terminal according to Mike Kovalchuk’s book “The History of Amherst Township” However these terminals only handled freight not passengers so passenger service ended there circa 1915 when Amtrak took over operation from CN Rail
