In 1850, James Meeks moved to Fenton and established a flour mill there; this became one of the leading factors in driving up demand for flour within the surrounding counties. By 1860, there were six stores, three churches, and ninety-eight people living in Fenton Village; by 1870, that number had increased to 418 residents with thirtyseven businesses. In 1861, William Dimmick organized what would become Kirksville as a township; it grew rapidly due to its location centrally within the new parish government system created by Kansas Territory when Missouri became a state on January 16th, 1861. On July 1st of that year, Dimmick appointed David Funk as first trustee for KirksVILLE Township #1 extending credit to settlers for goods they might need while they awaited their turn to receive supplies from Springfield Armory where munitions were being produced during the Civil War under license from General Ulysses S Grant! From this beginning things quickly began to happen here - shops sprang up throughout town and prices for groceries went up significantly! In 1865 David Funk sold his interest in KVIL & KRTV to Amos Tompkins who founded Monitor Newspaper Company which published various newspapers including The Messenger (later renamed The Times), later known as KCURFM Radio stations Broomfield FM 96.7 & Elk Grove Village FM 98 La Crosse FM 92& 103 WLUK AM 1410! All these changes happening during just one generation!!! This continued growth led directly to today's $92 per hour median wages average job size - larger than any other city or town within about 100 miles radius!!! And all this without ever having left our village...or even leaving our country!!
