Kirksville is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri, United States. The population was 6,598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Kirksville was first settled in 1820 and incorporated as a city in 1907. The Kirksville-based familyowned agricultural company, Davidoff & Co., still operates in the town today. The first settlers were two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Kirksville, who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1820. They founded a trading post on the Fenton River near present-day Poplar Bluff, Missouri. The company prospered and by 1830 had developed into one of the largest cotton plantations in America with over 100 slaves working it. In 1836, both brothers died young; their father succeeded them as head of the plantation and continued to run it until his death in 1840. In 1839, John Davidoff purchased shares of the plantation from their father's estate and began to develop it into a large cotton mill complex which became one of Missouri's leading industrial centers during the 19th century. He also built a house on Montresor Road outside of town for himself and his wife Ann (1807-1885). Davidoff remained an active shareholder through most of its growth; he personally invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in bonds and other assets that helped support its success. In 1870, he sold all his holdings except for about 10% remaining within town limits for $5 million to businessman George Washington Carver Sr., making him one of only three men ever to own such a large percentage (along with Rockefeller)of any single American business dynasty during that time period). The Town Hall Building now serves as both the courthouse and municipal building for Kirksville while various other downtown buildings serve as commercial or residential areas including: The Kirksville Opera House (built 1905), The Masonic Temple (1901), The Sheraton Hotel (1920), Davis Life Insurance Company Building (1929), The Old State Capitol Building (1930), First National Bank Buildings/Civic Center Complex(1932-1945), First Baptist Church/Church School Complex(1947-1966), Gentry Electric Supply Company Complex(1968-1981)), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Headquarters Complex(1982-) Davidoff & Co.'s fortunes declined following World War II but rebounded after Affirmative Action programs were put into effect at universities across America resulting in increased labor demand for Negroes employed there; this led to further expansion into new markets such as Japan postwar years before eventual divestitures beginning around 1990%. However by then much plant activity had ceased leaving little residual value behind - ending up selling off assets worth some $740 million between 1988-2008 according to Forbes magazine – having lost more than half their postwar stock value since they peaked just before WWII . At current market prices these properties would be worth less than $12 million . Although many residents remain engaged with local businesses some are now living outside Kirksville due primarily to cost effective access to quality education available closer to home while still benefiting from strong economic opportunities within town limits

Kirksville is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,343 at the 2010 census. Kirksville is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has been home to some of the region's earliest Settlers as well as one of its most important slave trade destinations during the antebellum period. The first European to visit what is now Kirksville was French explorer Pierre Le Moyne on his trip around 1685. He named it "Kirksville" after his father's birthplace, La Roche-sur-Yon in Normandy. The area that now makes up Kirksville was alluvial land that had been uplifted by floods over time. The first permanent settler in this area was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1786 from Kentucky and founded Caldwells Mills on the south side of town. In 1801, John Mooney moved from Illinois and established a farmstead along the Ottawa River just east of present day Kirksville. This old mill site still stands and is known as Mooney's Mill Pond. Shortly thereafter, other settlers began arriving in increasing numbers including George Washington Carver who bought 640 acres (260 hectares) near present day KirksVILLE for $5 per acre ($/ha). Carver turned this into one of the largest cotton plantations in America through intensive planting and cultivation techniques then developed for cotton production which remain fundamental to our country today: high yield with low inputs - an approach very much unlike anything practiced before or since then by industrial nations such as China or Japan which have relied heavily on chemical fertilizers and pesticides while damaging natural ecosystems worldwide! In 1857, three brothers—John W., David J., and Isaac—founded another large cotton plantation just northeast of present day KirsVILLE called Phelps & Whitney which became one of America's most famous slave holdings thanks largely to Elijah Parish Pamphlett (1793 – 1865), an American planter and politician who served asRecorder of Deeds for St Louis County from 1827 until his death at age 70 years; he also served twice as Mayor of St Louis! At auction block in 1862 Pamphlett received bids totaling $3 million dollars making him one of history’s richest men; however due to financial difficulties he sold all but 12 slaves back to their owners within six months! Pamphlett remains perhaps America’s most significant slave owner having never born free thereby preserving key elements essential to black development across this continent during antebellum days!
