Kirksville is a small town in Bollinger County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,833 at the 2010 census. Kirksville is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Bollinger County was on the east side of the confluence of the White River and Big Creek (now known as Kirksville Road). In 1839, Isaac Kirkland founded a log cabin on this site and named it after his father, Alexander Kirkland. The first school in Kirksville was built in 1841 by Reverend John Sibley and taught by his daughter Sarah Jane Sibley. A Presbyterian church was built in 1845 and served until 1890; it now serves as an Odd Fellows hall. In 1865, Jesse Ladd submitted to Ulysses S. Grant a petition for incorporation as a town; Grants granted incorporation on July 24 of that year. On December 6, 1870, following the death of General James Buell at Chattanooga during the American Civil War (the Battle of Chickamauga), President Ulysses S. Grant issued Executive Order No. 8265 which established military command over all Indian reservations west of Arkansas Line except for those within Kansas City National Military Park boundaries; consequently, Ladd's request for incorporation as a town failed to receive approval from Grant because these lands were not within Kansas City National Military Park boundaries at that time A post office called Kircsville was established in 1871 by order of Governor David Rector; it closed in 1893 due to lack of subscribers In 1897 there were reported to be 640 residents living in 154 buildings with an average income of $5 per capita The community experienced rapid growth beginning around World War I when many people relocated from larger towns or cities nearby because they found work available here government-run industries such as munitions factories began expanding In 1924 Main Street became State Route 141/Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard when US 41 was decommissioned and replaced with US 41N primarily due to rising travel costs associated with road construction projects throughout Missouri . At its peak this route carried over 10 million vehicles annually including most recently 585 thousand vehicles entering or leaving Springfield every day
