Kirksville is a town in, and the county seat of, Benton County, Missouri. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1821 by Col. George Kirks as a stop on his road from St. Louis to Akersfield. The name of the town comes from its founder's father-in-law, Archibald Kircs (1792-1868), who named it for himself and his wife Mary Kirkpatrick (1793-1864). The first settler in Kirksville was Capt. John Sibley and his family who arrived in 1821 with their wagon train from Kentucky. They built a log cabin near the present day intersection of Main Street and Church Avenue. Sibley became one of Benton County's earliest settlers and instigated much development within the community over time including building two churches (the first being erected in 1828) and numerous homes which remain standing today including most notably the Kircs' Mansion which still stands across from Main Street on what is now Henderson Drive. In 1831, Colonel George Kirks came upriver tonder land east of present day Kirksville on what is now called River Road about three miles upstream from where he would eventually build his home at River View Manor later that year. He organized an agricultural society which grew into what is now known as the Benton County Agricultural Society which hd several properties within Kirksville proper before moving its operations to nearby Raytown in 1865 following the Treaty of Paris ending American Civil War hostilities On July 25th 1861 Cpl James Hennessey enlisted into Company A 2nd Missouri Infantry Regiment then serving under Maj.-Gen Robert Ewing at Cairo Barracks with orders to march through Benton County homesteading areas southward along Iuka Creek toward Springfield so that Confederate forces could be destroyed prior to General Ulysses S Grant's expected invasion force invading Kansas Territory on October 15th that year He had just completed marching when he learned about Confederate attacks near Topeka resulting in three Union soldiers dead including Major John Laughlin commanding Company A 3rd Missouri Infantry Regiment who had been detailed escort for Hennessey - event that has come to be known as Topeka Massacre Two days later after reaching Springfield he found out about Confederate Lieutenant William Treadwell ambushing General Ulysses S Grant's column northeast of there while they were resting between towns Platte City and Riley on October 17th 1861 killing five Union Soldiers along with four Confederates taking prisoner Lt.-Colonel David Dixon commanding brigade command post northwest of Riley Aftermath Hennessey took cover under some trees until ordered by Captain Edward Ransom commanding Brigade Right Wing 6th Division United States Army Corps Northeast District headquarters located behind Milliken House close to contemporary Route 66 just beyond current day Mound Hill Farmstead where he surrendered himself without any shots being fired Sheriff Hiram Pugh New York State militia officers assisted him doing so plus Private Augustus Sheehan also surrendering that same night soon after Kirkstown Cemetery contains many famous people such as: abolitionist Frederick Douglass; author Fannie Lou Hamer; baseball player Roy Campanella; entrepreneur Cyrus Beecher; businessman Wilbur Wright
Kirksville is a city in Richland County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. Kirksville is the county seat of Richland County. The original town of Kirksville was founded by John Kirkpatrick in 1811 as part of the plat for what would become Richland County. It was named after Captain James Kippenberger, who had explored the area in 1798 and had recommended that it be divided into two counties - one for settlers from Kentucky and one for those from Maryland - because he believed that these two groups of people were best suited to each other's cultures. Kirksville was originally located on the east side of Missouri River opposite St. Louis, but when St. Louis annexed neighboring towns in 1836, Kirksville moved to its present location on the west bank of the river.
